Everyday ways to support individuals with Down syndrome and help create a more inclusive community:
Be inclusive in daily life
Make an effort to include people with Down syndrome in conversations, activities, and social events. Small gestures—like saying hello, inviting someone to join, or simply treating them as an equal—go a long way.
Use respectful language
Choose person-first and respectful language, and follow the lead of individuals and families on how they prefer to be addressed. Avoid stereotypes or assumptions.
Educate yourself and others
Take time to learn about Down syndrome, and gently correct misconceptions when you hear them. Sharing accurate information helps build understanding and acceptance.
Support independence
Encourage and respect independence by allowing individuals to make choices, learn new skills, and participate fully in everyday life.
Be patient and open-minded
Everyone communicates and learns differently. Practicing patience and being open to different ways of interacting creates a more welcoming environment.
Advocate for inclusion
Speak up for inclusive practices in schools, workplaces, and community spaces. Support policies and programs that promote equal opportunities.
Celebrate abilities and achievements
Focus on strengths and accomplishments rather than limitations. Recognition and encouragement help build confidence and belonging.
